I have 2 favorite phrases. The first is “What are my options?” I hate to miss out on something I may not know about.
And the second is the 2 word secret to originality – “What if…“
When creating something – anything – when there is that stuck place, the most creative thing you can ask is “What if…”
What if...I paint the background to be more interesting than the object?
What if…I sew all my scraps together to make a piano key border. You know, I sew while I wait for paint to dry : )
What if…I try powdered ginger root for horseradish in a carrot casserole (because I was out of horseradish)…which I did and my husband loved it. Note made in recipe book.
“What if” is how new things are created. The gingered carrot casserole is a great example of that.
Of course, you need to have a good dose of courage to make it work. Asking What if... and trying something new sometimes doesn’t work. Then it’s handy to know how to clean it up.
I have found that there is great freedom in taking risks by asking “what if...” And I really like the original things created from that simple 2-word question. Have you asked “what if…” lately?
