This was painted with thickened dyes. I just doodled on fabric pre-soaked in soda ash.
Here’s the process I used.
A day before you are going to dye paint, mix up a batch of chemical water as follows:
This mixture thickens over a 24 hour period. If you want it thicker, add more sodium alginate (up to 4 tsp). You can purchase urea, sodium alginate, and soda ash, as well as the dyes, at Dharma Trading.
After mixing the chemical water, go ahead and soak the fabric you will use in soda ash for about 20 minutes and then hang to dry. Do not put in the dryer!
Then when you are ready to paint, pour a little chemical water into a bottle or cleaned out glass jar. Add dye as desired. Be sure to wear a mask when measuring dye; the fine particles are dangerous to breathe.
The bottle on the right is a Wilton cake decorating bottle and the one on the left is for hair coloring. Any jar or bottle works! This dye mixture will keep several weeks with full potency. Just be sure to use pre-soaked fabric with it for permanence.
