Ever made unmentionables? You know, panties?
I saw on Pattern Review that several people had good results with Jalie 3242 panty pattern. I had tried an older Jalie panty pattern and threw it out – it didn’t work at all. This one did.
I took some inexpensive fabric and basic elastic and tried the pattern in my size just as directed.
Thinking there might be something to this whole panty thing, I looked online and ordered some lingerie elastic and had great visions of making panties out of the remnants of all the t-shirt fabrics I had accumulated.
I first tried fold over elastic – FOE for short. These lime green rayon spandex panties have the foe on the top. I found it to be not a very strong elastic. I like to feel more secure.
I tried a wider lingerie elastic and it works fine. I’m not super impressed, but it’s ok.
I also played around with how to not have a served lump for a seam on the sides. Tender skin there! Here you can see the flatlocking attempt. I think it would work fine except it is hard to maneuver the 2 slippery knit pieces through the serger and expect them to both get picked up by the needle.
I have since switched to a simple zig zag stitch laying one piece over the other – a flat seam.
I found that I liked this small scalloped elastic on all 3 openings – the waist and both legs. There are no worries about matching wide and narrow elastics either. Recognize this fabric? It’s from the blog post here.
Here are 3 more pair. I have to admit they are my favorites of all my unmentionables and I reach for them first when given the choice. I will add that I tweaked the pattern a bit to fit better.
I have 3 more pair cut out and ready to sew.
Have you ever sewn lingerie?
Happy Creating everyone!
