Are you busy preparing for “the season”? Shopping for gifts, shopping for the party you have planned, shopping for clothes to wear to said party, decorating, caroling, feasting on food and wine…it’s no wonder we get tired this time of year. And that’s just the physical stuff. The emotional stuff is just as tiring. Expectations anyone?
Being Good Enough
I spent many years toiling over the holidays and doing what the culture said needed to be done at Christmas so that I could be ok. Everything I did was not really for other people, it was for me. I desperately wanted to be declared “good enough.”
Every year about the first week of December a feeling of dread settled over me and didn’t leave until sometime the first week of January. And every year I would declare that things had to be different. I did not know what “different” would look like, but I knew it had to happen.
I believe that on that first Christmas angels sang and simple shepherds celebrated. Since I could not make the mental leap from baby in manger to sparkling perfect tree, we opted out of the tree part. Instead, we found an old manger – yes, a real wooden manger from an old demolished barn – and put that in our house with lights, strips of cloth, and nails. That was it.
It was freeing! It was rebellious in the best of ways. I felt a little guilty for not participating in “the season”, but my heart was settled. My heart is still settled.
Making Room for the Present Moment
So what matters to you? Do you celebrate this season as one of anticipation – the awaiting of the promised Messiah? Do you celebrate the gathering of family over warm meals? Do you celebrate in the festivity of the season with Santa and reindeer and HoHoHo? Think about it and prepare accordingly – and leave the rest out.
The reason we do the season is to prepare a place for love. A place not only in our homes, but in our hearts. We love in the present moment – not burdened in the past or wishing on the future.
