Sometimes the hardest thing to do is not paint what you see, but paint around what you see. It’s called negative painting and means that you fill in the area around your main item. It’s a hard concept to grasp, but this quilted art collage is an example.
I began by playing with paints on the canvas. Then drew in the pears and filled in the bottom half of the painting with the white fabrics & papers. What I didn’t fill in was the shadows. That’s the part that is negatively painted. Do you see?
It’s a pretty neat trick.
Happy creating today!
